Instrument Rentals and Purchases
Recorders, Guitars, Ukuleles, Harmonicas

These instruments are either purchased by the family or are included in the year's tuition.
It is generally most cost effective to purchase violins and guitars being used for the year. They can later be passed down to younger siblings or sold to another family.
Susan does offer to find a buyer for your guitars and violins if your family has outgrown the instrument.
It is not recommended to purchase a used wind instrument from another family such as the recorder or harmonica. It is better for each child to have their own recorders and harmonicas as the cost is low ($10 or less) and also for health and sanitary reasons.
Susan arranges purchase of recorders and harmonicas for each child. She also prepares them in advance of class play for each child.
Violin rentals and purchases
Some families have found it’s more cost effective to buy a violin because it can later be sold for almost what you paid for it. Please call Susan 250-595-1040 if you would like to talk more about what would be best for your family.
If you have a small violin and would like to sell it to another family, please think about your price and then bring it to Susan. She will help you find a buyer. Susan does not take a fee for this, she just offers to help match children to their new violins.
Choosing a violin
- Susan often has violins waiting for a new home. She doesn't charge a fee for this, it's simply a convenience for families
- If you are renting a violin from a music store you MUST take your child with you to the music store
- Do this by mid-August if you are preparing for fall classes. Don’t wait until the day before classes begin
- The person sizing the violin for your child will know what to do.
Purchasing a used violin
- Susan may have a violin to sell on behalf of another family. Cost is usually less than $150. Check with Susan. If Susan is sizing your child, you will need to bring your child to Musicalia to choose the correct size
- Used violins are also available at Craigslist, pawn shops and garage sales. You’ll need to have some knowledge about violins to have success with this option, so keep my number on hand if you do
- Retail options: Larsen Music and Long & McQuade both rent AND sell violins.
